In the United States military forces, war dogs are associated with the troops and they take significant part in the war game. The SEAL Team Six and the most popular "Soldier Dog" named Cairo were commissioned to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden way back in 2011. In the operation, Cairo used his dog senses and canine skills to accomplish the mission of killing Bin Laden. This Dog was effective aid in the triumph of the operation. Other military dogs are used as sniffing dogs to discover threats (similar to what you see at the airports), some are guards and companions of the military troops, some are used for search and rescue operations. The war dogs are also used to guide and lead the soldiers in dark and treacherous places. Closeness and faithfulness are developed between the handlers and trainers. They are genuine lovers of dogs and with their beloved friends, they are an indispensable members of the military. According to Maria Goodavage, author of the new book "Soldier Dogs", dogs' extreme sensitivities and alertness make them great in the battlefield. She added that dog's sense of smell is stronger and greater than human thus they can recognize if danger and fear are at hand much more effectively. Dogs are more vigilant than we are and they are always ready to attack. There is inseparable relationship between trained dog and his military master as they often sleep and eat together, moreover play together. Greatness of military dogs is achieved by the patience and compassion of their handlers. Dog is man's best friend and a great companion and protector in times of danger and war. The training of dogs, especially the Belgian Malinois dogs, is usually conducted in Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Texas. Training is tough and tiresome for both the handlers and the canines during the preparation for the battlefield or a special mission. The course also includes lessons and training for the development of extreme physical tolerance and mental readiness. Trainers at Lackland are also required to know basic commands in different languages. Some smaller dogs like the tiny Jack Russell terrier "Lars J274" are also included in the Navy services. These dogs are great in sniffing bombs in submarines. Breeding and training of military or war dogs are customary practice in Germany and Netherlands. After the accomplishment of the mission or when the war is over, the military dogs are brought back to the United States and oftentimes are adopted by their handlers which bring them home to their families. However, during Vietnam era, war dogs were treated harshly and the poor dogs were abandoned and even erased after the service. Unfortunately, today dogs are still treated only as tools and instruments in the war instead of co members of the team. In 2012, bipartisan Canine Members of the Armed Forces Act presently proposes its way through both houses of Congress to have clear and definite plan for the retirement, adoption, care and appreciation of military working dogs.
The Leopard 2 is a tank which was developed for the German Army in the early '70s by Krauss-Maffei. It was the successor of the Leopard 1 and soon became the German Army's chief battle tank. The Leopard 2 was first put into service in the year 1979. Aside from Germany this tank came into service in 12 countries in Europe and even some non-European nations sought after it, so there is no wonder around 3,480 Leopard 2 tanks were manufactured in total. In the battlefield, the Leopard 2 made its debut when the German Army brought it to the battlefields of Kosovo. The contingents from Canada and Denmark brought their own Leopard 2s in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force. This tank saw two batches of development. The original models (until Leopard 2A4) had a turret armor that was vertically oriented. The improved models or the Leopard 2A5 on the other hand (along with the versions that followed) boasted of a turret appliqué armor that was angled and arrow shaped. Other improvements were made to the newer batches as well. All of these tank versions were equipped with laser range-finders, digital fire control systems, advanced night vision equipment, thermal imaging (later on) as well as coaxial machine gun & fully stabilized main gun. The upgraded sighting equipment is worth mentioning since it made the tank the very first vehicle to utilize an LLLTV or low-light level TV system. This tank was designed to engage any moving target while in motion over rough terrain.
Men love their toys. These are "big boy toys" that have tons of power and a lot of horse power, having 1000 under the hood. That being said, which one is better? Our guys wanted to know so they went out to where the army trains in Neumünster, Germany.
Of course there are some made-up outrageous German weapons that you might have seen in some video games such as Call of Duty, but there actually were some pretty amazing arms that the Germans used during the second World War. When the war was coming to an end, it was a race for their scientists and engineers to come up with some of the most high-tech weapons of that time period. The reason for this is that Hitler was frantically scrambling for a weapon that would give him an edge over his enemies, but, of course, he was too late. The final project called "Wunderwaffen" ("The Wonder Weapons") did not have enough time to complete.
Watch how the World War II European front lines have edged back and forth from the bitter start to the glorious end. From the Nazi invasion of Poland to the day Germany has finally surrendered and Allied forces emerged victorious.
The Hunting Panther or Jagdpanther from Germany was designed based on the Panther tank chassis. It was first used in 1944 by the Germans on both European Eastern & Western fronts of WWII. Military historians exalt this tank as one of, if not the best, destroyers of its time. This distinction is largely due to the outstanding suspension of the Panther, the high performance armor, and the highly effective KwK 43 cannon (8.8 cm).
When Josh Hargis was an Army Ranger stationed in Afghanistan's Panjwai district he came under enemy fire and suffered wounds. He survived his severe injuries while four of his team members were killed. This soldier was given the Purple Heart by the American government. The photo above was sent to his wife that was taken by his commander and the note that came with it is an inspirational message. It took couple of hours after Josh was wounded before he arrived at the hospital to be treated. When he was seen by doctors, he was immediately operated on. Many hours later, he emerged from the ICU at the Afghan base of the US military in severe pain & mental duress. However, he was alert and he received the few Rangers allowed at this bedside. Before he was transferred to Germany where he would be flown back to the US, Joshua was given the Purple Heart. The simple ceremony was held in honor of the wounds that he received in action. Imagine a room full of Ranges, doctors, nurses surrounding the wounded soldier who was confined in bed. The Ranger Regimental Commander presented the medal and pinned it to Josh's blanket. The official orders were published verbally. The Commander leaned over to Josh and sincerely thanked him for his noble sacrifice. The 50 people in the room assumed that Josh was unconscious at that time, but he started moving his right arm in an effort to salute the officer. The doctor tried to restrain Josh because his right arm had all sorts of tubes and bandages over his wounds, but Josh fought the doctor and successfully rendered a salute. That day, the height of emotion which permeated the ICU was truly intense. All the men and women were overcome and began to weep as Joshua's simple gesture spoke volumes about his character. The picture that deserves a place in every newspaper and news channel is now hanging above my desk. For me, it is the greatest event that I have witnessed in my 10 years serving in the US Army.
